Facial Plastic Surgery
A common misconception is that Facial Plastic Surgery is purely
cosmetic work. In fact, most of the surgical procedures are used for
both reconstructive and cosmetic purposes.
A Rhinoplasty (nose job) may be done to make the nose look more
pleasing. It may also be done to relieve a blocked nose because the
nose may be crooked.
The cartilaginous and bony skeletons of the nose are connected. If
one is crooked, it will cause the other to be crooked as well. Some
patients find that their nose is still blocked after a Septoplasty
because the operation failed to straighten their septum. This may be
because a Rhinoplasty was required.
There are patients who seek a second opinion because they are uncertain if they were unnecessarily advised to have a rhinoplasty when only a septoplasty was required.
Other reasons patients come for “revision” Rhinoplasty are: the
previous operation failed, there was a complication or there is
some problem with their implant. Silicone implants often deform the tip of the nose and a revision rhinoplasty is often necessary to repair the defect and replace the implant with a safer one.
Other Facial Plastic Surgery procedures are also done for both
cosmetic and reconstructive reasons. An Upper-lid Blepharoplasty may
be done to create a “double eyelid”. A Forehead Lift may be done to
raise the eyebrows to a more attractive position.
Both of the above procedures may also be done to rehabilitate a
paralysed face, or for older people whose upper eyelid skin is so
loose that it covers their field of vision.
A common misconception is that a Face-lift lifts the face. It
actually lifts the jowls (jawline) and neck rather than the face.
The lifting of the face requires a Forehead and Mid-face Lift.
Lower-lid Blepharoplasty is usually done to remove eyebags. A
Mid-face Lift is commonly done together with this procedure through
the same incision.
